Sculpture realized at Susse Foundry - Paris
Gold leaf gilding realized at Ateliers Gohard – Paris
From the original 2D calligraphic design to the 3D resin model, and from the molds to the final bronze casting, this sculpture required one year of work and collaboration, from June 2010 to July 2011.
"I have been looking for years for a graphic designer with the knowledge to go from 2D to 3D, until then all I had been able to do was to give depth, to make an extrusion. I’ve found the process liberating, being free from the confines of two-dimensional space.“ Nja Mahdaoui
Founded in 1758, Susse Fondeur is the oldest art foundry in France, and probably in Europe. The foundry is internationally renowned for the exceptional quality of its casts and has been chosen by many of the world’s most prestigious artists. Some of the greatest sculptors of the 20th century worked there, including Jean Arp, Henry Moore, Germaine Richier, Picasso, Giacometti, Braque, Dalí, and Chagall. Susse employs ancient techniques such as the “lost-wax” process, used by Classical and Renaissance sculptors, as well as sand casting, for which it uses a special sand found only in the Seine basin.
Founded in Paris in 1962, Ateliers Gohard employs highly skilled, workshop-trained artisans who share a deep love for their craft and great respect for the treasures entrusted to their care. Some of their commissions are particularly spectacular — the Dome of Les Invalides in Paris, for instance.
